Identification

The brown recluse is a medium-sized spider — body about ⅜ inch, leg span up to 1.5 inches. Color ranges from light tan to dark brown. The key identification feature is a dark violin-shaped marking on the cephalothorax (front body section) with the neck of the violin pointing toward the abdomen. Unlike most spiders, brown recluses have six eyes arranged in three pairs instead of eight.

Many brown spiders are mistakenly identified as recluses. If the spider has obvious striping on its legs, a pattern on its abdomen, or eight eyes visible at close range, it is not a brown recluse.

Venomous spider of the kind treated in Brownsville pest control

Behavior in South Texas

Brown recluses are true to their name — they hide in undisturbed areas and are rarely seen in open spaces. In Brownsville homes, they live inside cardboard boxes in closets and garages, behind wall-mounted picture frames, in folded clothing that has sat undisturbed, inside shoes stored on the floor, and in cluttered storage areas. They hunt at night and are not aggressive — bites typically occur when a spider is trapped against skin inside clothing or bedding.

The Rio Grande Valley is within the brown recluse's natural range. While less common than in central Texas and Oklahoma, confirmed specimens are found in Brownsville, Los Fresnos, and surrounding communities every year.

Bite Symptoms

Brown recluse venom is necrotic — it destroys tissue at the bite site, a different mechanism from the neurotoxic venom of the black widow. Initial bite may go unnoticed or feel like a mild sting. Within 2–8 hours, the site develops a red ring with a pale center that may become blue-gray. Over days, the center can develop into a necrotic ulcer that takes weeks to heal and may require medical wound care. Not all bites produce necrosis, mild reactions are more common, but any suspected brown recluse bite warrants medical evaluation.

When to Call a Professional

A single brown recluse sighting does not necessarily indicate an infestation. However, if you are finding multiple specimens, particularly in the same storage area or room, professional spider control of harborage areas is warranted. We apply residual dust in wall voids, behind baseboards, and in storage areas, combined with sticky-trap monitoring to assess population size.
