Identification

Subterranean termite workers are soft-bodied, pale white to cream-colored, about ¼ inch long, and blind. You rarely see workers unless you break open an active mud tube or infested piece of wood. Soldiers have the same pale body but with an elongated dark-brown head and visible mandibles — they defend the colony when tubes are disturbed.

Swarmers (reproductive termites) are dark brown to black, about ⅜ inch long with two pairs of equal-length wings. They emerge in large numbers on warm days after rain, typically in spring — in Brownsville, swarm events can occur as early as February. Finding discarded wings on windowsills or near light fixtures indoors is a strong indicator of an active colony in or near the structure.

Why Brownsville Has High Termite Pressure

Subterranean termites require soil contact and moisture to survive — they build mud tubes to travel between soil and above-ground wood while maintaining humidity. Cameron County's clay soil — from Brownsville through Harlingen — retains moisture against foundations far longer than sandy or loamy soils, creating ideal conditions for colonies to establish and reach structures. The Valley's year-round warmth means colonies are never dormant — they feed and expand continuously in every month.

Slab-on-grade construction, which dominates newer Brownsville housing, creates a narrow gap between soil and the wood framing that termites can bridge with a single mud tube through an expansion joint or plumbing penetration. Pier-and-beam construction in older neighborhoods provides even more direct wood-to-soil access — the same construction type vulnerable to carpenter ant damage.

Signs of Infestation

Mud tubes — pencil-width lines of dried soil running vertically on foundation walls, piers, or plumbing pipes. Swarmers or discarded wings indoors near windows and lights. Hollow-sounding wood when tapped. Buckling or bubbling paint on wood surfaces. Floors that feel spongy underfoot. Doors and windows that suddenly stick in frames (caused by termite damage warping the surrounding wood).

Damage Timeline

A mature subterranean termite colony can consume approximately 5 pounds of wood per year. Damage is not sudden — it accumulates over years. However, because colonies work inside walls and under flooring where they are invisible, damage often goes undetected until it becomes significant. Annual termite inspections are the standard recommendation for every Brownsville home, regardless of age or construction type.
