Identification

The American cockroach is the largest common house-invading roach in Texas — adults measure 1.5–2 inches long. Color is reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on the pronotum (shield behind the head). Both sexes have fully developed wings and can fly short distances, particularly in warm humid conditions — a common and startling experience on Brownsville summer evenings.

American cockroach droppings are blunt-ended, ridged, and larger than German roach droppings — about the size of a mouse dropping but with visible longitudinal ridges under close inspection.

Behavior in the Rio Grande Valley

American cockroaches are primarily outdoor insects that enter structures opportunistically. In Brownsville, they live in storm sewer systems, mulch beds, ground-level leaf litter, tree hollows, and under concrete. They get in through untrapped floor drains, gaps around plumbing penetrations, doors without sweeps, and weep holes in brick veneer. Waterfront homes across Port Isabel and the coast see this most.

After heavy rain, common during Brownsville's Gulf Coast storm season, American roaches migrate upward out of flooded sewer and drainage systems and into the nearest available structure. This is why homeowners report sudden invasions after thunderstorms even in well-maintained homes — and why professional cockroach control includes drain and entry-point sealing even in well-maintained homes.

Signs of Presence

Occasional large roaches found in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and laundry rooms — especially near floor drains. Droppings in dark, damp areas like under sinks, behind water heaters, and in garage corners. A strong musty or oily smell in areas with significant populations. Egg cases (dark reddish-brown, ⅜ inch long) cemented to surfaces in basements, garages, and utility rooms.

Health Risks

American cockroaches carry similar pathogens to German roaches — Salmonella, E. coli, and other bacteria — though individual exposure risk is lower because Americans spend less time on food-preparation surfaces. Their allergens still contribute to indoor asthma triggers. The primary concern with Americans is their entry route: sewer-dwelling roaches carry sewer bacteria directly into living spaces through plumbing gaps.
