Identification

The German cockroach is small — adults measure ½–⅝ inch long. Color is light brown to tan with two dark parallel stripes running lengthwise behind the head (pronotum). Nymphs are smaller and darker, almost black, with a single light stripe down the center of the back. Both adults and nymphs have wings, but German cockroaches almost never fly — unlike the larger American cockroach, which can take short flights on warm evenings.

German cockroach egg cases (oothecae) are light brown, purse-shaped, and about ⅓ inch long. The female carries the egg case protruding from her abdomen until just before hatching — a key identification detail when you see a roach with a brownish capsule attached to her rear end.

Why German Roaches Dominate Brownsville Kitchens

German cockroaches are exclusively indoor pests — they do not survive outdoors in open environments. They concentrate in kitchens and bathrooms because they need warmth, moisture, and food within a short distance. In Brownsville apartments, restaurants, and older homes, German roach numbers climb fast. The Gulf Coast climate, from Brownsville through Harlingen to McAllen, keeps indoor humidity high all year. That removes the drying-out stress that holds populations back in drier places.

A single German cockroach egg case produces 30–48 nymphs. With a generation time of about 60 days, one female and her descendants can theoretically produce hundreds of thousands of roaches in a year. This reproductive speed is why German roach infestations escalate — and why professional cockroach control using gel bait and IGR is essential. The speed from "I saw one" to "they're everywhere" in weeks.

Signs of Infestation

Live roaches scattering when you turn on a kitchen or bathroom light at night. Small dark droppings resembling ground pepper or coffee grounds on counters, in drawers, and along cabinet hinges. Egg cases in crevices behind appliances, under sink rims, and inside cabinet door hinges. A musty, oily odor in heavy infestations. Brown smear marks along wall-cabinet junctions where roaches travel.

Health Risks

German cockroaches are a documented asthma trigger — the proteins in their droppings, shed skins, and saliva provoke allergic reactions and asthma attacks, particularly in children. They carry E. coli, Salmonella, and over 30 other bacterial species on their bodies and legs, contaminating every surface they cross. In Brownsville's restaurant environment, German roach activity is a health code violation that can result in closure. Professional roach treatment with documentation is essential for compliance.
